Is It Wasteful to Play With Food?

March 25, 2015 by Katie T. Christiansen 9 Comments

When there are starving children all around the world, should we encourage children to play with food? Is it wasteful to play with food? I hear lots of people use this reasoning when they see an activity where food is used with children.   Is it Wasteful to Play with Food? Today I share this topic with you, not as just a teacher or mom, but as someone who has spent three months with some View Post

Ladybug Counting Busy Bag

March 19, 2015 by Katie T. Christiansen 2 Comments

Ladybugs are a favorite bug among preschoolers, and they are especially fun for counting! I made this busy bag for my class so that we could work on quantity, counting, and even tracing numerals. The ladybugs are made of circles that I cut out from foam. I used two sizes, a smaller one that holds up to five glass beads. Then there are larger ones that can hold up to 10 glass beads. What’s the Difference Between Child Care and Preschool

March 10, 2015 by Katie T. Christiansen 7 Comments

What's the difference between child care and preschool? Are child care and preschool programs so different? Is one elite and the other just convenient? Are there different requirements for teachers? I've worked in both types of programs, so I thought I would clear the confusion! I live in the U.S., so I can only speak for where I live. Each country and even each state has different rules View Post

Finished product of rainbow paint rolled out on long butcher paper

This rainbow rolling pin art project is always a favorite, and we usually do it around our annual rainbow theme. Little ones and big ones can do this with ease, and it always turns out beautifully. It's even a perfect combination of process art and gross motor skills! Children can do it alone or with another friend. Here are our rainbows from last year. We originally got the idea from View Post

Rainbow Sight Word Lacing Busy Bag

February 19, 2015 by Katie T. Christiansen 1 Comment

I came up with this rainbow sight word lacing busy bag for my kindergarten-aged daughter, who I am homeschooling. Some of my Pre-K kiddos are ready for this as well. My daughter is not a fan of learning sight words. I came up with this activity desperately hoping she would like it a little bit. Thankfully, she loves it -- phewww! It's so nice to finally have a sight word activity that she View Post

This is definitely one of our favorite playdoughs ever, and it was so easy to get the nice lemony smell. Our lemonade playdough was so inviting and quickly transformed into some fun Mickey Mouse "cookies." And have I mentioned the View Post

Colored Ice Shapes as Snow Pictures

January 22, 2015 by Katie T. Christiansen Leave a Comment

Ice is a blast to play with, and we love using it in both the summer and winter. We made colored ice pictures in the snow, and they turned out beautifully. The process was super fun and very easy for little hands to do! My inspiration for this activity came from the colored ice sculptures by  Happy Hooligans. I happen to be an ice cube tray addict, and these ones from IKEA were given to our View Post
