Candy Heart Fizzing Science Project

January 20, 2014 by Katie T. Christiansen 11 Comments

We are huge fans of candy games here, and I am so excited about this one! Last year, we did a  Valentine's Heart Fizzy Painting project from Gift of Curiosity, and I just had to do another fizzing science experiment this year too. This time I wanted to use my heart ice cube tray from IKEA to add some extra Valentine's Day vibes. This science project turned out just the way I envisioned View Post

Need some perfect and inviting ways to promote fine motor practice? These scissor practice ideas in our sensory table have been incredible. This post contains affiliate links for your convenience. Oh, how I love activities that are open-ended and encourage creativity.  For scissor practice, I used to set everyone at the table and give them papers to cut -- this is what I saw teachers doing View Post

Finding Beauty in the Unexpected

December 24, 2013 by Katie T. Christiansen 27 Comments

As my son sits next to a stranger on a park bench, he casually points to his older sister. "That's my sister. She only has eight fingers." He's right. Our wonderful daughter was born with only 8 fingers. Parenthood is a journey, and in many instances, there are plenty of surprises. Whenever there are medical complications or birth defects, you are bound to have more. Every parent only View Post

Candy Cane Literacy Game

December 18, 2013 by Katie T. Christiansen 1 Comment

This candy cane literacy game is a fantastic way to get children involved in letter recognition. It's so fun and easy, and we love doing it each year!   Easy is heavenly in my book! Our most recent invention involves just three candy canes. No mess, no hassle, no preparation -- just open ended learning and fun! With three mere candy canes (which I left in the wrapper), I started View Post

Felt Christmas Tree With a Twist

December 13, 2013 by Katie T. Christiansen Leave a Comment

Last year when the adorable felt Christmas trees were flooding pinterest, I decided to make my own: a felt Christmas tree with a twist! I decided to do without the presents and to add some symbolism instead. While I love Christmas, I feel that it gets bombarded with gifts, instead of focusing on the most important gift of all. In our family, Christ is the reason for Christmas, and I wanted to View Post

Candy Cane Ice Cream

December 9, 2013 by Katie T. Christiansen 8 Comments

It's been crazy cold here -- 0 degrees Fahrenheit or about -18 degrees Celsius. Despite the freezing temperatures, I decided it would be great to make ice cream with my preschoolers. I must say that I am sooo glad I did because it was AMAZING!! Cold temperatures certainly can't take away from something that is absolutely delicious.  Since Christmas is coming soon, I thought it would be so much View Post

December 5, 2013 by Katie T. Christiansen 8 Comments

Make a simple Christmas Advent Countdown for preschoolers and toddlers. The countdown to Christmas has begun, which means that curious little minds are anxiously awaiting the number of days until Christmas. Christmas advent calendars are super fun and some are quite delicious if I might say so myself.  I decided to go with one that I could turn into a DIY Christmas advent calendar View Post
