Make Brown Bear, Brown Bear Lacing Cards for fine motor practice while reading a beloved book or for a Brown Bear theme or Eric Carle theme.

We are reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear this week, and I thought that it would be perfect to come up with a fine motor small group activity or busy bag inspired by this dearly loved book! I’m including free printables for this lacing activity, so you can make your own.

It seems that lacing is one of the areas that I forget about often when teaching. The skills gained from it have incredible benefits, so I’ve been trying to remember to include more and more lacing activities lately. I know that it is not appealing to every child either, so I was hoping that by including some Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? inspired pictures, it would entice each of the students.

Thankfully, it worked! As these were coming out my printer, the kiddos started cheering, and I could hardly get these made fast enough for their excitement. This busy bag activity has been well loved in my classroom and home, and it would work perfectly on the go too.

Brown Bear Lacing Cards

To prepare this busy bag, you will need the following items:

  • Printed lacing cards
  • Hole punch
  • Laminator
  • Yarn with tape or a shoe lace

And of course I recommend having the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? around!

I love using my Scotch Thermal Laminator, and you can buy super affordable laminating pouches here. No need for the expensive ones!

Instructions:

1. Cut out the lacing cards and hole punch the designated holes.
2. Put them through the laminator. Then cut and hole punch again.
3. Take your yarn and make a knot or loop at the end. The thinner the yarn, the bigger the knot needs to be.
4. Use scotch tape to secure the opposite side of the yarn.

If you use a shoe lace, skip steps 3 and 4 :).

Voila! Now you have a wonderful busy bag activity to provide entertainment and enjoyment for (hopefully) a long time.

Hi Katie, I think this is an awesome activity that I’d love to use with a little girl I work with. However, when I click the purple cat no download comes up. If there any tricks to this? Or any other way I could download the lace cards? Thank you for all your amazing resources!
