We are joining in on the fun of making sensory doughs with some blogging friends, and I really need this. In all honesty, I overthink messy play. I think of the prep, the mess, the possible accidents, the aftermath, the potential chaos — and it slightly overwhelms me. So I’m committing to making a different dough each month in 2015 because all of the mess, the prep, and the headache are always worth it! My kids always love it, and that makes it more than worthwhile.

First up is snow dough, and we decided to bring in the characters and castle from Frozen to make it into a small world. To make our snow dough, I used three ingredients:

Frozen Small World in Snow Dough-3

8 oz. baking soda (Corn Starch or Corn Flour could be substituted)

2-4 oz. coconut oil (hardened)

Water in a squirt bottle

We doubled this recipe, and it worked great for the corner of the sensory tub that everything fit into. I added the mirror for “ice,” and the kiddos put in the glass beads because we just love them. I’m sure you already know this, but since glass beads are small, they can present a choking hazard, so just supervise accordingly.

Frozen Small World in Snow Dough-5

We just mixed the coconut oil and baking soda together to form the crumbly looking part of the snow dough. To make it more dough-like and mold-able, we just sprayed it with the water. I left the kiddos in charge of this. A preschooler will never turn down a squirt bottle!

Frozen Small World in Snow Dough-2

The more coconut oil there is, the easier it is to mold the snow dough into different shapes. Then it really firms up after you let it set! We shaped our dough for ages before adding it to our sensory tub, but I didn’t have my camera handy at that particular time.

Frozen Small World in Snow Dough-4

I tentatively came up with this recipe, hoping it would work, and I’m thrilled that it was so great! We’ll be using it all week in preschool now for our frozen and winter theme! If you have never tried snow dough before, I highly recommend it.
