Do you have little ones who are ready for some writing practice? I’ve come up with space-themed number writing practice cards, and I’ll show you a great way to adapt it for pre-writing or writing practice.

I have to put out a word of caution though! I used to teach children to write by handing them a marker, and some of them were definitely not ready! As I’ve looked back on some of the portfolios of former students, I see really weak fine motor skills in their writing. It wasn’t their fault! And I honestly thought I was being helpful.

Don’t worry though because I have the perfect solution for children who are not ready to actually write yet too that I’ll show you a little bit later down.

I am super picky about any writing activities I put out for children. If it’s something they come up with, then I give full freedom. But when I make it, I have three main criteria:

  1. It should be meaningful.
  2.  It should not be frustrating to a child.
  3.  It should be something I can set out for them, demonstrate it once, and let them do the rest.

In other words, writing needs to be enjoyable! And it needs to be right at their level.

You can get this space number printable here.

In this writing activity, children will be able to start at the green dot and follow the shape of the number.

We laminated ours then used a dry-erase marker. This laminator is my favorite, and this is an awesome spray to clean off any dry erase marks that don’t easily rub off.

Now for the littles who are not ready to write yet! Just grab some glitter glue and trace the number. It becomes a perfect tactile surface to trace!

I’ve also used the technique for name writing practice too.
